An analysis of Sir Percy's pedigree confirms that a significant number of the New Zealand broodmare pool will cross very well with him.
The dominant lines in Sir Percy's pedigree are clearly
Nearco/Nasrullah and
Tourbillon/Djebel. These lines are combined in Never Bend's pedigree and since inbreeding to
Never Bend is very effective this is a good place to start. Mares by
Straight Strike, Bertolini, Volksraad ,
Desert Sun, Cape Cross, Almutakawel and Brief Truce all have lines of Never Bend. Mares carrying Riverman would be especially interesting for Sir Percy as the
Mill Reef - Riverman cross has worked well. Similarly, inbreeding to the great mare
Lalun - as found in
Sadler's Wells, Fairy King and Sound Reason - has also been highly effective. Lalun is readily available in New Zealand through
Encosta
Delargo, Montjeu, Shinko King and Victory Dance.
The most significant Djebel line stallion to stand in New Zealand is, of course,
Centaine. Daughters of this remarkable broodmare sire with his dominant speed lines would cross beautifully with Sir Percy.
Towkay, inbred to Tourbillion/Djebel, would also be a great speed oriented match and any mare bred on a
Towkay/Centaine/ Sound Reason cross would be particularly interesting.
Sir Percy has only one strain of Northern Dancer through Ajdal so he will pose no problems for broodmares with one or more Northern Dancer strains close up. The Northern Dancer x Mill Reef nick is well documented and mares by
Last Tycoon (damsire Mill Reef) and his son
O'Reilly would be very appealing. It is worth noting that Sir Percy's female family has done especially well with
Nijinsky.
Inbreeding to the
Aureole-Nearco nick has been very successful . Mares by
Grosvenor and those with
Hermes or Saint Crespin in their pedigrees are well worth considering for Sir Percy as complementary influences for his
Vaguely Noble line. The
Aureole - Round Table combination is also a proven mix and any mare carrying a strong Round Table presence (
Sir Tristram, Zabeel, Kaapstad) must have considerable appeal to reinforce this element in Sir Percy's pedigee.
Sir Percy, with his 2 year old speed, world class middle distance classic and exceptional female line has all the credentials to succeed at stud.
