Surprise Baby back to target Melbourne Cup

The Bart Cummings Andrew Ramsden Stakes (Listed, 2800m) runnerup Surprise Baby (Shocking) has returned to light work at Paul Preusker's Horsham stables ahead of a Cup campaign this spring.

The Bart Cummings (Gr 3, 2500m), which like the Ramsden offers a Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) ballot exemption for the winner, shapes as a logical assignment for Surprise Baby, with Preusker suggesting he wouldn't need to race him into fitness.

"He's come back well from a quick freshen-up and we're just re-running the program so there's only a bit of foundation work going on at the moment," Preusker told Racing.com.

"He looks good, he's put on some kilos and he's mentally grown a bit. We're still hoping to get to the Melbourne Cup, we'll stick to that. I've got a few tricks up my sleeve yet so we'll dish him up tougher and better.?
