Stunning Adelaide Cup win this afternoon by Shocking's dashing son

Surprise Baby turned in a remarkable performance of quality and stamina to give Rich Hill Stud stallion Shocking consecutive Gr.2 Adelaide Cups.

He followed the 2018 winning lead at Morphettville of the dual Group One winner's daughter Fanatic.

The Rich Hill-bred Surprise Baby was making just his sixth race day appearance and had only broken his maiden at Horsham in the spring.

The four-year-old then won posted three subsequent victories and jumped to 3200 metres today off the back of a fourth over 2000 metres at Flemington.

The master behind the gelding's rise has been trainer Paul Preusker.

"He's a horse that has been a bit difficult along the way, but he's gifted enough to get away with it," he said.

"He's a tough horse with a sharp turn of foot. It's been a big team effort and it was a beautiful ride by Dean (Holland)."

Surprise Baby is out of Bula Baby, who is a daughter of the G2 Sedgwick Classic winner Miss Tessla.

The pedigree page also features the Gr.3 Champagne S. winner and Gr.1 Thousand Guineas placegetter Antarctic Miss (NZ) (Ustinov).

Surprise Baby travelled comfortably in midfield before Yendall urged the gelding along and they strode to the front 200 metres for an effortless win.

"He's one of the best trainers and I can't thank him enough for his support," Holland said.

"This horse is still so young and still learning. We got a good run and he was never going to get beaten from 800. He's very exciting."
